The Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany wants the US Supreme Court to resolve a “persistent split” in the circuit courts about laws “burdening religious exercise” that allow for religious exemption.
The diocese filed a petition on Friday asking the high court to reviews its challenge to New York’s insurance coverage requirements for medically necessary abortions. The case, the organization wrote, provides an opportunity for the high court to weigh in on the religious exemption issue and clarify its 2021 decision in Fulton v. Philadelphia.
