Sunnyside Gold Corp. will pay $45 million to resolve claims linked to the cost of cleaning up hazardous substances at the site of the 2015 Gold King Mine spill in Colorado, according to a settlement filed in a New Mexico federal court.
The U.S. sought reimbursement for the costs of cleaning up decades of releases at the Bonita Peak Mining District Superfund site in San Juan County, Colo. Historic mining operations at the site contaminated the soil, groundwater, and surface water with zinc, lead, and other heavy metals, the Environmental Protection Agency says.
