States Win Injunction Over Trump Food Stamp Grant Conditions

A federal judge stopped the Trump administration from enforcing conditions on states’ funding for food stamps and school lunches.

Judge Myong J. Joun said Friday he would grant a preliminary injunction requested by a coalition of 20 states, halting enforcement of the conditions outlined by the US Department of Agriculture including anti-discrimination, gender ideology, and immigration provisions.

In the order, Joun of the US District Court for the District of Massachusetts stated that he will issue a memorandum of decision later.

The states sued in March, alleging the administration was seeking to condition Agriculture Department funding on “vague, extraneous, and unreasoned” ideological conditions.

Potentially at stake is funding for safety-net programs such as the Emergency Food Assistance Program and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, better known as WIC. Funds for school lunches, firefighting programs, and university-level agricultural research might also be at risk, the complaint says.

The case is Massachusetts v US Dep’t of Agric., D. Mass., No. 1:26-cv-11396, Order 6/5/26.
