States Sue Over Legal Status Screening for Social Services (2)

Over a dozen Democratic-Party led states say the Trump administration is unlawfully requiring them to screen the legal status of people looking to use services like domestic violence shelters and soup kitchens.

The states, in their new complaint Monday, allege the new requirement illegally transforms the meaning of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996, which governs the eligibility of non-citizens for public benefits. The states say the Trump administration is violating both the Administrative Procedure Act and the Spending Clause.
