Stanford Newspaper Advances Suit Over Threats to Student Visas

Stanford University’s student-run newspaper can pursue First Amendment claims against the Trump administration over deportation threats to students publishing opinions criticizing Israel.

Stanford Daily Publishing Corp. and two college students on F-1 visas who published pro-Palestinian content online established legal standing to bring their free speech suit, Judge Noël Wise of the US District Court for the Northern District of California said Friday.

The students, who are proceeding anonymously in the case, have shown that they have begun to self-censor their beliefs and opinions over “a substantial threat to visa revocation or deportation,” Wise said.
