The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department has agreed to pay $4,914,000 to settle the claims of people it arrested in the wake of an officer’s acquittal in 2017.
Jason Stockley was charged— but not convicted—of the murder of Anthony Lamar Smith, leading to a September 2017 protest in St. Louis. A class action filed about the protest alleged that the police used chemical agents on protesters before arresting them. Judge Catherine D. Perry of the US District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri gave final approval to the class settlement Tuesday.
