A group of seven Republican-led states filed a lawsuit against the US Department of Education Tuesday seeking to block the Biden administration’s cuts to monthly student loan payments, the latest legal challenge to the president’s efforts to lessen student debt burdens.
The complaint, filed in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri, takes aim at a July 2023 Department of Education rule allowing borrowers to enroll in income-driven repayment plans that lowered their monthly federal student loan bills to as low as zero.
