A federal judge in Detroit gave final approval to an agreement that says US Immigration and Customs Enforcement won’t indefinitely hold Iraqis without cause after hundreds of Iraqi nationals were detained during President Donald Trump’s administration and a class action was filed.
Judge Mark A. Goldsmith of the US District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan gave his blessing to the settlement during a fairness hearing Wednesday and formally entered the order Friday. The agreement comes after the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan sued in 2017 to halt deportations to Iraq.
