Securly Beats Suit Over Collection, Disclosure of Student Data

Educational software provider Securly Inc. defeated a proposed class action alleging the company collected and disclosed the geolocation data and video-watching histories of grade-school students in the Saint Paul, Minn., public-school system in violation of state privacy law.

Lead plaintiff Nicole Hunter failed to establish that her minor child suffered an injury sufficient for standing to sue in federal court, Judge Donovan W. Frank of the US District Court for the District of Minnesota said Wednesday.

But the judge granted Securly’s motion to dismiss without prejudice, allowing Hunter to amend her complaint.
