The US Supreme Court agreed Friday to hear an appeal by former Chicago Alderman Patrick Daley Thompson over the scope of a federal statute that criminalizes “false statements” made to influence certain financial institutions, including federally insured banks.
Thompson—the nephew of former Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley—claims that the statute, 18 USC §1014, prohibits false statements but not statements that are, while literally true, misleading.
