San Francisco and Police Chief William Scott may have denied promotions to five White male officers because of their race, sex, or both, an Oakland federal judge ruled Tuesday.
Key evidence in the case includes statements allegedly made by Scott in 2017 that he considered racial and gender diversity when deciding who to promote to sergeant, lieutenant, and captain, the US District Court for the Northern District of California said. Scott’s actions weren’t challenged in 2017, so it can be reasonably inferred “that he continued to rely on race and gender in 2018 and 2019,” the court said.
