Safety-Kleen Systems Inc., which operates the world’s largest used oil re-refinery in East Chicago, Ind., is facing a lawsuit from the federal government alleging that the company’s wastewater discharges contain excessive pollutants in violation of the Clean Water Act.
In a complaint filed Thursday in the US District Court for the Northern District of Indiana, the government alleged that Safety-Kleen violated federal pretreatment standards by discharging wastewater with excessive levels of pollutants like cyanide, mercury, and oil and grease into East Chicago’s sewer system.
