A computer scientist will ask a federal appeals court to find that artwork created by his artificial intelligence program is eligible for copyright protection.

Stephen Thaler seeks to upend an Aug. 18 ruling of the US District Court for the District of Columbia that the work doesn’t qualify for protection because it lacks human authorship, according to a notice of appeal to the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit filed Wednesday.
