Ruffles Sour Cream and Cheddar Crisps Label Deceptive, Suit Says

Frito-Lay Inc. deceives consumers by failing to disclose artificial flavor in its “Ruffles” brand “Baked Lays Cheddar & Sour Cream Flavor” potato crisps, a new proposed class suit alleges.

The PepsiCo Inc. unit portrays the crisps as naturally flavored, but their principal flavor components don’t come from natural sources. The product’s “sour cream” flavor comes from synthetic diacetyl, Californian Jesika Vado alleges in a suit filed Monday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California.

Front label representations include “Cheddar & Sour Cream,” “Flavored,” “Baked,” “65% Less Fat Than Regular Potato Chips,” a wedge of cheddar cheese, ...
