Retirements Hand Healey Chance to Revamp Top Massachusetts Court

Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey (D) will have a second vacancy to fill on the state’s top court after Supreme Judicial Court Justice David Lowy announced he will retire next February.

Justice Elspeth Cypher previously announced she will retire this coming January. The seven-member court is currently composed entirely of Republican appointees, though more liberal than in other states.

Lowy has served the court as an associate justice since August 2016.
