Property Managers Not Liable for Age-Targeted Ads on Facebook

A 55-year-old woman looking for an apartment, who didn’t see advertisements on her Facebook Inc. feed that property managers targeted at consumers 50 years old and younger, didn’t have standing to sue the managers, the Fourth Circuit said Tuesday.

Neuhtah Opiotennione didn’t show that she suffered a particularized injury traceable to the defendants’ challenged conduct, Judge Allison Jones Rushing said for the US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Opiotennione, who was searching for rental property in the Maryland and Washington, D.C., markets, sued under local consumer laws.
