California voters have equal rights to the legislature to enact laws, a coalition funded by Uber Technologies Inc.-, Lyft Inc., Instacart, and DoorDash argued Tuesday in defense of a ballot measure that exempted gig workers from employee classification rules.

That argument, echoed by attorneys for the state itself, was directed at a three-judge panel conducting the first appellate court hearing on the 2020 initiative known as Proposition 22, with the goal of overturning a trial court ruling that blocked its implementation.
