NJ Justices Uphold Top Cop’s Paterson Police Takeover (2)

New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin (D) can legally “supersede” the Paterson, NJ police department, the state Supreme Court ruled Wednesday.

Any ambiguity over the legality of the state’s takeover of the City of Paterson Police Department, which Platkin said was plagued with excessive force incidents, was resolved by the Legislature appropriating $18 million for the mission, the unanimous New Jersey Supreme Court ruled in a blow to local government autonomy. However, the court left unclear whether a state takeover would be permissible in other contexts
