A Los Angeles federal judge poised to make the first major ruling on the DOJ’s nationwide push to obtain state voter rolls asked on Thursday how federal requests to inspect voters’ personal information might chill participation.
California is accused of violating several federal voting laws by refusing to show the federal government registered voters’ drivers license and social security numbers, in one of about a dozen DOJ lawsuits requesting that states hand over comprehensive voter data. The federal government has at times linked its request for voter files to immigration enforcement efforts.
