People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is taking aim at Massachusetts’ broad prohibition on secret recordings, claiming the law unconstitutionally burdens its ability to carry out undercover animal welfare investigations.

The animal welfare group’s lawsuit, filed Monday in the US District Court for the District of Massachusetts, said it has plans for such probes in Massachusetts but the state’s Wiretap Statute criminalizes its efforts to unearth potential evidence of unlawful treatment of animals.
