Perplexity AI Hit With Trademark Suit Over ‘Comet’ Browser Name

Generative AI firm Perplexity AI Inc. was hit with a trademark infringement lawsuit Monday from another AI company Comet ML Inc., which alleged Perplexity’s planned Comet AI browser will cause consumer confusion.

Comet ML said it has been using the Comet name since at least 2017, obtaining federal trademark registrations two years later, but Perplexity has chosen to use the name in “willful disregard” for Comet’s prior rights.

A court in Germany has already ordered Perplexity to cease and desist from using the name in the country in connection with AI web browsers based on Comet ML’s complaint, the Monday ...
