A Texas county’s taxpayer-funded push to register voters has drawn a legal challenge from state Attorney General Ken Paxton (R), who suspects it’s being done to boost the number of registered Democrats.
Bexar County, home of San Antonio, lacks authority to spend $400,000 to mail voter registration forms to people who didn’t request them and who might not even be eligible to vote, Paxton said in a state court lawsuit filed Tuesday.
The county’s actions “will create confusion, facilitate fraud, undermine confidence in elections, and” go beyond statutory authority, Paxton’s office said in the petition.
