A Kansas federal judge sanctioned several attorneys representing patent owner Lexos Media IP LLC in an infringement suit against Overstock.com Inc. for filing briefs with artificial intelligence-generated quotations and legal citations.
The attorneys for Lexos, which alleges Overstock infringed three patents that relate to modifying the display of a cursor image on a website, violated a federal rule of civil procedure by signing filings that included fabricated and misrepresented legal authority, Judge Julie A. Robinson of the US District Court for the District of Kansas said in a Monday opinion.
