Parts of Michigan’s Sex-Offender Registry Law Deemed Invalid

Portions of Michigan’s sex offender registration law run afoul of the US Constitution, a Detroit federal judge ruled.

Judge Mark A. Goldsmith, of the Eastern District of Michigan, said Friday in his 115-page opinion that requiring registrants to follow certain provisions of the law passed after they committed their crimes—such as increased reporting requirements and staying on the registry for longer—is unconstitutional and “excessive.”

Similar problems exist with provisions that force individuals convicted of certain nonsexual crimes to register, the judge wrote, while others violate the First Amendment.
