Paramount Defeats Writer’s ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Copyright Lawsuit

Paramount Global fended off a lawsuit from writer Shaun Gray who alleged he contributed to the script of blockbuster film “Top Gun: Maverick” but failed to receive credit or payment.

Judge Jed Rakoff of the US District Court for the Southern District of New York ruled Friday that Gray lacked any authority to independently copyright the scenes he wrote because they are part of the broader Top Gun universe that is owned by Paramount.

The ruling also put Gray, who first sued Paramount in 2025, on defense. Rakoff declined to toss out Paramount’s counter-claims that alleged Gray violated its copyrights ...
