Otter.ai Sued Under Wiretap Laws Over Meeting Transcription Tool

Otter.ai Inc’s automated transcription tool for Google Meet, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams meetings violates federal and California wiretap law by failing to get sufficient consent from conversation members, a suit alleges.

California resident Justin Brewer’s complaint contends Otter participates in meetings as a third party to record conversations it otherwise isn’t a part of, and is inconsistent with how it obtains consent to conduct real time transcriptions. His complaint, filed at the US District Court for the Northern District of California seeks a court order barring the company from engaging in what Brewer calls wrongful, unfair and unconscionable conduct.
