OpenAI, Authors Chided by Judge for Slow Pace of Copyright Case

A San Francisco federal judge reprimanded attorneys for both OpenAI Inc. and a group of authors for dragging their feet in a novel copyright case involving claims that training AI models on books without permission violates copyright law.

Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín at a Tuesday hearing rejected an agreement between the parties to extend case deadlines by six months, citing the already slow pace of the litigation.

“I’m at a loss, I don’t think anyone has unclean hands here,” said Martínez-Olguín, who sits on the US District Court for the Northern District of California.
