An Ohio grand jury on Thursday declined to indict a woman on an abuse of a corpse charge after she suffered a miscarriage at home and tried to dispose of the fetus.

The decision by the Trumbull County grand jury ends the case against Brittany Watts, which attracted national attention and outrage among abortion-rights advocates who argued that indicting and prosecuting her would lead to fear among women of being charged should they find themselves in the same situation. It also highlights the sometimes precarious situation women of color find themselves in should they experience pregnancy complications.
