NY Yeshiva Regulation Row Could ‘Open Flood Gates,’ Judge Says

A New York State judge said she’s worried about the repercussions of letting proceed a lawsuit challenging the state’s decision to roll back certain education standards for religious and private schools, namely Jewish yeshivas.

Kings County Supreme Court Justice Katherine Levine said Thursday that applying New York’s constitutional guarantee to provide a sound basic education to private schools, could “open up the flood gates to allow the Department of Education to go in and do whatever it wants. That’s the fear. These are religious schools.”

Oral arguments, which began Thursday, are expected to continue on Tuesday.
