New York’s Independent Redistricting Commission can begin preparing to redraw the state’s congressional map, even as it waits for the state’s highest court to decide whether a new map is actually needed, the Court of Appeals clarified Tuesday.
The decision came in response to opposing briefs filed by IRC leaders, with commission Vice Chair Charles Nesbitt and four other commissioners saying the panel can’t take any action until the Court of Appeals decides whether it will uphold a recent lower court ruling directing the IRC to submit a new congressional map to the legislature.
