NY Judicial Complaints Up Sharply Amid Increased Public Scrutiny

New York State’s Commission on Judicial Conduct in 2024 received 3,353 new complaints against judges, according to its new annual report, marking the highest number of complaints it’s ever received—something the agency attributes to increased public attention of both judicial ethics and the commission itself.

The commission—an independent state agency that handles ethical misconduct complaints against the 3,350 judges in the state court system—said in its report, which was released Tuesday, that new complaints have risen substantially in the past decade. Since 2015, the commission has averaged about 2,221 new complaints and 160 formal investigations per year.
