A New York federal judge raised doubts Wednesday about whether ICE should be allowed to operate a holding facility at a lower Manhattan immigration courthouse where detainees are allegedly held in crowded, unsanitary conditions and refused access to legal counsel.
Attorneys for a group of former detainees want the court to issue a permanent injunction requiring US Immigration & Customs Enforcement to prevent future overcrowding in the holding rooms at 26 Federal Plaza, and to ensure basic needs of detained people are met going forward.
