New York Chief Judge Rowan Wilson was formally sworn in to lead New York’s top court Tuesday ahead of a series of important cases that could include deciding whether current state congressional lines will hold for the 2024 elections.

The ascendance of the left-of-center jurist—who was officially confirmed in April—has cemented a liberal majority on the seven-member Court of Appeals while punctuating the end of a year of political drama. Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) nominated Wilson to become the first Black chief judge in state history after Senate Democrats in February rejected Brooklyn appellate judge Hector LaSalle as too centrist. ...
