North Carolina Lets Out-of-State Lawyers Help With Hurricane

Out-of-state lawyers can provide pro bono legal services to those impacted by Hurricane Helene under a pathway approved by the North Carolina Supreme Court Tuesday.

The emergency rule amendment lets lawyers licensed in other states register with the North Carolina State Bar and begin offering their services immediately, rather than waiting for approval from the State Bar Council.

At least 160 people have died since Hurricane Helene swept across the southeast last week, with North Carolina facing severe winds and flooding that devastated parts of the state.
