New York Will Adopt NextGen Bar Exam in 2028, State Announces

New York’s highest court announced it will begin administering the NextGen bar exam in July 2028, making the state the 30th jurisdiction to adopt the test.

The exam—developed by the National Conference of Bar Examiners—will replace the state’s Uniform Bar Examination, the Court of Appeals wrote in a notice to the bar Wednesday. The state will continue to administer a New York law component alongside the new exam “to ensure attorneys who wish to be admitted in New York are sufficiently versed in New York legal principles and practice,” the notice says.
