Netflix Defeats Broadcom Bid to Revive DVD System Patent Claims

A Broadcom Inc. unit failed to convince the Federal Circuit to reverse a ruling that certain claims of the company’s video-on-demand DVD system were unpatentable.

The appeals court affirmed the US Patent and Trademark Office’s 2022 decision on Thursday, disagreeing with Broadcom Corp. that the office’s construction of the term “drive server” lacked evidentiary support. It’s a victory for Netflix Inc. , which had successfully petitioned against 16 claims in Broadcom’s patent for the system.
