The NAACP’s Tennessee chapter sued to try to invalidate the state’s Republicans’ new US House map, which wipes out the state’s sole Democratic and majority-Black district.
State law only allows officials to draw new congressional maps after the US Census and subsequent reallocation of congressional seats, and the General Assembly’s repeal of that law and suspension of a candidate residency requirement is illegal, a petition filed Thursday in state court said.
Gov. Bill Lee (R), in calling the special session for redistricting, also didn’t follow the Tennessee Constitution and specifically name why the state legislature must convene, the suit said. ...
