Monsanto to Pay Oregon $698 Million in PCB Pollution Settlement

Monsanto Corp. will pay Oregon $698 million to end litigation claiming the Bayer AG-owned company polluted the state’s landfills and riverbeds with now-discontinued polychlorinated biphenyls, the state attorney general said Thursday.

Oregon’s 2018 negligence lawsuit against the chemical giant claimed decades of PCB contamination have had a devastating impact on air, water, land, and habitat and magnify as they move up the food chain.

The company under the settlement will pay the state $698 million “for their contemptible role in polluting Oregon for the last 90-plus years with PCBs,” Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum (D) said at a news conference. ...
