MoneyGram Hit With Class Action Over September Data Breach

MoneyGram Payment Systems Inc. failed to protect the personal information of customers whose data was exposed in a September breach, a proposed federal class action said.

MoneyGram allegedly breached its duties under common law, contract law, industry standards, and state and federal law to implement reasonable and adequate data-security measures.

The breach occured as a result of a “social engineering attack” on MoneyGram’s IT help desk by a criminal intent on selling or otherwise misusing the data, according to a complaint filed Thursday in the US District Court for the Northern District of Texas.
