Michigan’s Whitmer Sets Legislative Election After Voters Sue

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) on Friday called a special election to fill a state Senate seat that’s been vacant for nearly eight months, after a lawsuit was filed to force her to act.

The primary to fill the 35th District seat in the state Senate—where Democrats hold a slim majority—will take place on Feb. 3 of next year, and the general election will be on May 5. The Saginaw-area seat was vacated on Jan. 3, when Kristen McDonald Rivet (D) was sworn in to the US House of Representatives.
