Michigan’s ban on having Medicaid cover abortions doesn’t comport with a voter-passed constitutional amendment enshrining reproductive rights in the state constitution, a state YWCA chapter alleges.
The complaint, filed Thursday by the nonprofit YWCA Kalamazoo, is the latest attempt by pro-abortion groups to chip away at restrictions the state still has on the books despite the amendment, which passed months after the US Supreme Court’s 2022 ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. Due to that amendment, “the coverage ban plainly cannot stand,” according to the lawsuit, filed in the state Court of Claims.
