Michigan Justices Waive Away Arguments Against Sex-Offender Law

The most recent version of the Michigan’s sex offender registration law doesn’t run afoul of the state and US constitutions, the state Supreme Court said Friday as it rejected a prisoner’s challenge that said it’s unduly punitive.

The majority of the seven-member court said the 2021 version of the law constituted punishment, writing that “it approximates the traditional punishments of shaming and parole, burdens registrants with onerous requirements under the threat of imprisonment for noncompliance, and serves the penological goal of retribution.”
