A Miami nurse has been served a 20-year prison sentence for her role in a $192 million Medicare fraud scheme, according to the Justice Department Thursday.
Elizabeth Hernandez signed orders for medically unnecessary orthotic braces and genetic testing for Medicare beneficiaries that she never actually treated. She ultimately ordered more cancer genetic tests for Medicare beneficiaries than any other provider in the country during the time of the conspiracy, the DOJ said.
Hernandez reaped about $1.6 million from the scheme, which she used to purchase luxury items, home renovations, and travel, said the agency.
