Meta Sheds Bulk of Consumer Suit Over Portal Device ‘Bricking’

Meta Platforms Inc. convinced a federal judge to dismiss most of a proposed class action alleging the tech giant misrepresented how long its Portal video calling device would be functional.

The alleged misrepresentations in the complaint weren’t false at the time of purchase, Judge William H. Orrick of the US District Court for the Northern District of California said Thursday.

Meta launched the Portal in 2018, and the device became popular during the pandemic. The company announced it was discontinuing the product in 2022 and began phasing it out in 2023.
