Meta Asks Court to Toss Verdict in Social Media Addiction Trial

Meta Platforms Inc. asked a Los Angeles judge to throw out a March jury verdict that found it liable for the mental health struggles of a woman who began using its platforms as a child, according to a motion filed in California Superior Court on Wednesday.

A Los Angeles jury found that Meta and Google were negligent in how they designed their platforms, and that the companies failed to warn consumers about the dangers for minors. Jurors said Meta must pay $4.2 million to the the 20-year-old plaintiff, Kaley G.M., and that Google owes $1.8 million.
