MedStar $1.35 Million Data Breach Settlement Gets Final Approval

MedStar Health Inc.'s agreement to pay $1.35 million to settle allegations that it negligently allowed health insurance and provider information to be taken in a cyber incident received final approval from a federal court.

Only four people out of a class of approximately 183,000 people opted out of the settlement, filed in the US District Court for the District of Maryland. The agreement provides members medical and health-care data monitoring, and either reimbursement for up to $5,000 in documented losses or a pro rata cash payment. MedStar also took steps to better secure its systems.
