- Gov. Maura Healey (D) makes first Supreme Judicial Court pick
- Elizabeth “Bessie” Dewar previously worked for Ropes & Gray
Gov. Maura Healey (D) nominated State Solicitor Elizabeth “Bessie” Dewar for a seat on Massachusetts’ Supreme Judicial Court Friday, replacing retiring Justice Elspeth Cypher.
Dewar is Healey’s first nomination to the state’s highest court, which is currently made up of appointees from her Republican predecessor, Charlie Baker. She still has one more seat to fill on the seven-member court, as Justice David Lowy announced his impending retirement last month.
“Bessie Dewar is a consensus builder who has significant experience working with the Supreme Judicial Court and also a deep passion for the important work that the Court does. She is a true student of the institution, and I am confident that she is the right person to fill this seat in this pivotal moment for the Court,” Healey said in a press release.
Before serving as the state’s solicitor general, Dewar worked as an appellate and trial lawyer at Ropes & Gray LLP.
Dewar’s nomination will be processed by the Massachusetts Governor’s Council, an eight-member body that considers judicial nominations and pardon requests.
