Massachusetts State Solicitor Elizabeth “Bessie” Dewar was confirmed to serve on the state’s highest court Wednesday, a seat she will be able to hold for the next 27 years.
The Governor’s Council, the eight person panel that approves judicial nominations, voted 7-0 to confirm Dewar despite voicing concerns at her nomination hearing that the 43-year-old could be too young for the bench. Massachusetts allows judges to serve until they reach the mandatory retirement age of 70.
Dewar is expected to cement the Supreme Judicial Court’s liberal lean, and has advocated for reproductive rights, student loan forgiveness, and gun safety.
