Louisiana Plan for State Voting Districts Faces Fifth Circuit

A challenge to Louisiana’s redrawn state legislative districts, arguing they dilute the power of Black voters, faced questions from the conservative-leaning Fifth Circuit Tuesday.

A group of Black voters and organizations that work to expand Black voter engagement in Louisiana succeeded in their bid in the lower court to block the state from using the redrawn district maps, after they alleged the maps violated Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. A Louisiana district court issued a permanent injunction on the redrawn district plans in 2024 and ordered state lawmakers to go back to the drawing board.
