Lottery Winner’s Lawyer Disbarred for Devising Fraudulent Scheme

A Massachusetts lawyer who had lost his state law license for helping a lottery-winning client dodge child support was also disbarred from practice before a federal appeals court.

There’s no basis to question Massachusetts state bar and court findings that James Hayes “cooked up” a fraudulent scheme “by which his client could defraud others,” the US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit said in an Aug. 13 per curiam opinion.

The Massachusetts Bar Counsel filed a four-count petition for discipline with the state’s Board of Bar Overseers against Hayes in 2020.
